Vanessa special guest....short accoustic set only. |
Vanessa Contenay-Quinones is French, Paris born and bred. She grew up loving the sounds of the 60s she found rummaging through her parents record collection.. Serge Gainsbourg, Birkin, Francoise Hardy, Polnaref and Brel> Rock&Roll/Elvis/ Buddy Holly/Eddie Cochrane/Doo-Wop/ 'Be-Bop/Billie Holliday, Lou Reed and Scott Walker she discovered for herself.
It wasn`t much fun being the only out of time `Teddygirl/Ye Ye` in a strict convent school so she raised a few family eyebrows and quit at 16 to start out on her life in music...but, finding the french music scene of the time uninspiring and no A&R's who wanted to give her music an ear she upped and moved to London and within a year had signed an album deal with Jeff `believe in magic` Barratt's Heavenly Records releasing her first largely self produced album `Manifesto` under the name Espiritu, a melodic latin/Hip hop/beats & cut-ups fusion. Pretty soon she was France`s coolest export with four singles denting the UK top 50, a number 1 and a lot of albums sold in Japan she was feeling a lot better! When Jeff set up the new Heavenly/Deconstruction label she signed there too releasing her second self produced album `Another Life,` an experiment in `underground drum & bass pop` which includes collaborations with `A Guy Called Gerald`, Tom Middleton and Monkey Mafia amongst others, again to critical acclaim [being the first to add a full orchestra to drum & bass grooves!]. This sound being a little too experimental for wide consumer taste Vanessa parted company with Deconstruction [soon to be no more sadly] and after a final sassy flourish of electronica with a big beat remix of the B52`s 'Love Shack' she holed up in her home studio in west London and set about writing a whole new bunch of songs exploring a more guitar inspired sound leading her to rediscover ealry loves Lou Reed, Nico and the Velvets. In 2003 she actually hooked up with Lou in a NY studio after he heard some of her solo material and recorded a 'franglais' duet of the Velvets classic 'Sunday Morning', Vanessa convincing Lou to add some parts in French!
Back in London Vanessa picked up the new songs she’d been working on and feeling the time was right to collaborate and not be sole writer/producer for a change she hooked up with Swedish artist/composer duo Andreas Mattson [Popsicle] and Niclas Frisk [Atomic Swing] who had been writer/co-producers of Cardigan Nena`s solo album A Camp and so VANESSA & THE O`S was born! Looking for a fresh indie pop sound ...
[“..epatant album d’ultra pop, entre Bardot et le Velvet..” Les inrockuptibles],
....mixing French and English with dreamy melodic pop songs [and not forgetting French 60s pop] the O`s spent the year writing and recording on a mac portable in hotel rooms and apartments in Paris, Stockholm, New York and London, becoming a magnet for other musicians including ex Smashing Pumpkin James Iha who liked the music so much he joined the band! The O`s released their first limited edition EP `PLUS RIEN` on the tiny Dolores Records label in Stockholm 2003 going on to finish an album through 2004/2005 with HIVES producer Pelle Gunnerfeldt the latest addition to The O`s fraternity mixing debut album La Ballade d’O with the guys in his Stockholm studio. Which brings us to now, February 2007 and the album released in France, Sweden, Denmark, Norway, Portugal, Japan, Thailand, Finland and worldwide digital via iTunes, live shows in France, Sweden and England under their belts with more to come in March, Vanessa's vocal guest appearance the legenadary SCOTT WALKER album THE DRIFT and The O's featured on the forthcoming ENNIO MORRICONE tribute album 'We All Love Ennio Morricone' alongside Bruce Springsteen and Metallicas with a version of the Morricone/Francoise Hardy 60's classic “Je changerai d’Avis” it promises to be a great new year!
